No, it's probably possible with the above, but that's not as simple as 
it sounds.

Absolutely, long-term is preferable is preferable. But many developers 
now have a "server-side" mindset. They don't want to make assumptions 
about clients, and they don't want clients to have to install plugins.

I hope you can see where I'm going with this. My solution satisfies 
today's demands but with capabilities, thus providing a migration path 
to the next evolution (like yours). I honestly think something like what 
I proposed is a necessary first step given current market conditions.
