[cap-talk] Capabilities ... and OS frustration

As far as I can tell, this list is the main forum in the world right now for 
discussing capability-based access control. Butler has been making public 
statements for many years that indicates his beliefs about access control are 
at odds with many of those on this list. And no one on this list represents 
Butler's position -- it goes undefended on this list, and therefore mostly 
unexamined.

Either Butler's beliefs are wrong, or the beliefs generally shared on cap-talk 
are wrong. As an intellectual, and especially as an intellectual making public 
statements, the opportunity to correct widely publicized errors -- whether his 
or of those on this list -- should be considered a high priority use of time.

The same goes for us: given this public disagreement, it would be 
irresponsible for us not to seek to discuss these matters with Butler. Please 
let's leave further judgment about where his time is well spent to him.
