Indeed, automating the building of trust is not possible. I have seen
web pages talking about how CAs supply a trust infrastructure. This is
ridiculous. Trust is something that people build up using very human
mechanisms, as studied by sociologists like (surprise) Granovetter.

The only really good answer to the building of trust, it seems to me, is
to make sufficient repairs to the system so that the methods of trust
building that people use in physical space map naturally onto
cyberspace. This is the path that enables us to leverage the things that
people are good at already, rather than trying to hammer the round
people into the square holes that currently exist.
