I did look at filter drivers. The file API is not as simple as I
thought it would be, and MarcS already had the copy/sync working.
Copy/sync also fits better with our goals in developing Polaris. We
didn't want to modify the OS or the applications. Also, we didn't want
to be in the business of intercepting system calls, which involves
making a goodness/badness decision. There's very little that can go
wrong with the synchronizer, and there are no decisions to be made.
