I just found out about a NetBeans (java) based collaboration tool.   
You can create a shared editing session, and chat through a shared  
server.  I haven't tried it extensively, but it looks like you can  
find people in public rooms, add them to your contacts, and then  
create a private collaboration with them.

The way I found it was that I am on the x3d-public list where they are  
discussing networking and X3D.  Here are the links to get to it:
