Actually that case is a surprisingly robust analogy. If you talk to shipbuilding engineers, they will tell you that from an engineering perspective those compartments were completely useless. The need to cable and pipe the ship led them to make a number of fatal compromises, including failing to bring the compartment boundaries up far enough within the superstructure to make them useful.

In short, they were compartments designed by marketing.

I'm sure that if I hum a few bars of that tune, it will seem very familiar..
