Actually the can opener was O(n). It was for pure convenience and
nominally to bundle authority.
As we used it each programmer would have his own can opener for the
things he had programmed.
We foresaw more sophisticated uses.
As Jonathan says, all of the sorts of amplification (synergy) were
backed up by arguments that nothing was thereby allowed that was
otherwise impossible, except at greater expense.
