He misunderstood me so thoroughly that I came to doubt
he was reading what I wrote.  Doubting he was reading
what I wrote, writing more seemed pointless.  It
resembled those tedious and pointless political
discussions where no matter what one writes, one's
interlocutor quite sincerely believes that one has
written "Kill the Jews" One is then forced to reply,
making a reply that is the absolute minimum necessary to
deny that one wrote "Kill the Jews", and so the
unwanted, tedious and unpleasant conversation continues,
very much against one's will.

Of course, one always tends to over estimate how clear
one has been, but when one finds a response that
indicates total and utter incomprehension, it is almost
impossible to respond, for even if one wisely blames
oneself rather than the reader, one has insufficient
information to discover what went wrong and frame a
clearer statement.

Therefore, the minimum response necessary to indicate
one has been misunderstood is always appropriate, no
matter how honestly and sincerely one's interlocutor
believes one has written "Kill the Jews"
