Well it's true that applications like OOo or GIMP will always need an
external representation.

Now daemons (e.g., NFS, D-Bus, Avahi, PulseAudio) that currently often
come with their own configuration file format *and* on-line
configuration clients could probably do away with the configuration file
machinery in an orthogonally persistent system.
