I think there is room for doubt, despite intuition saying that
complexity would obviously increase, were we to start reifying more (or
different) things in the user interface.

For a long time, the majority of people in infosec believed that
security and usability were mutually exclusive -- many still do. We're
beginning to learn that in fact they must share a common maximum -- done
right, each reinforces the other. 

Conventional wisdom is often wrong, particularly in security. So yes, I
seriously think there is room for doubt and until we do the experiments,
we're all talking nonsense -- particularly me ;) (You'll agree this too
happens far too often in infosec as well, I suspect.)
