The problem is that the only references Bob has are petnames, so we need to give him a way to pipeline messages to promises.  We can do that if Bob sees a petname that can only be bound to one promise.  When that petname settles, Bob will see a different petname if he already had a reference to the result.  As I said, strange, but probably workable.
