My experience is that "capabilities" are okay again. Obviously this
only applies to the people I interact with—internet startup folks,
Free Software and Open Source hackers, operating system geeks,
programming language geeks, crypto geeks. I have no idea how the
captains of corporations or the leaders of behemoth bureaucracies see
it.
But from my perspective, it is a heartening story that the hard work
that Shapiro, Miller, Stiegler, Yee and others (sorry to leave anyone
out) did in publishing papers during the last decade has born fruit. I
have stopped expecting my interlocutors to have misunderstandings of
the fundamental properties and limitations of capability-based
security and I have started expecting them to have a vague but fairly
accurate understanding.
