Well, it's pretty simple. Here's a narrative of the process.
I followed your instructions, didn't find the new "erights.org" in the
Start/Programs menu. I tried this a couple of times.
After a little snooping around, I REMed out the "@echo off" line in your
Startup.bat, watched it execute. I saw that it was reporting insufficient
environment space.
My memory for DOS stuff having been idle for some time, it had faded. And
Win98's help was no help, of course: "Why would you want to do anything
with DOS these days?"
So I did a little askjeeves-ing and turned up a promising and familiar
CONFIG.SYS entry:
shell=c:\command.com /e:xxxx /p
...where xxxx is the number tbd to provide adequate environment space; I
don't know what the default is, but evidently Symantec VisualCafe and
whatnot had used it up in making CLASSPATH and PATH what they wanted them
to be.
I don't remember what the /p option does off hand.
(my Win98 CONFIG.SYS was essentially empty: just some REMed-out DEVICE= lines)
I tried substituting 1024 for the xxxx above, rebooted, and the install
worked.
As you may recall, standard procedure is to reboot after you change
CONFIG.SYS.
But then E and Elmer both reported insufficient environment space when I
ran them. So I fiddled with the value of xxxx; 2048 worked, so I started
chipping away. I've settled on 1200. So far, it seems to work. A smaller
number might suffice, but there's such a thing as overwaxing a banana. :)
That's my story.
