Good point about MAC's vs. hashes. MAC doesn't mean anything to most people,
but I shall try to keep the word "cryptographic" in the context.

That said, I think you are making a mistake to believe that hash values do
not in general have other uses. If nothing else, I may wish to use them as
keys elsewhere.

Let's turn this around.

Can you offer a compelling reason why the hash function and it's generated
values should *not* be exposed? It strikes me that in the absence of such a
reason we have a flexibility limitation in the code that need not be
present.
