We discussed this issue over dinner last night.  The basic information is
that MacOS 9 will probably never support Java > 1.1.   MacOS X (pronounced
OS ten) now supports 1.2 and will support 1.3 when it ships.  OS X is
expected to ship as a public beta this summer, and ship as a final early
next year.

OS X is a Mach kernel supporting a BSD Unix layer supporting several MacOS
compatibility environments.  The Mach and BSD portions are open source.

Peri agrees with MarkM that Java 1.2 isn't up to Javasoft's normal quality
levels, but 1.3 has the potential to be commercial quality.  She suggests
skipping 1.2 entirely for this reason.
