Quick response:

1. Your password does not go to the list. It goes only to you.
2. You can can tell the mailing list manager not to send a monthly report
via the web interface.
3. This isn't exactly a high-security application.
4. I agree with you in abstract.

It doesn't appear possible to turn off passwords in the monthly notice
without also turning them off in the email reply to the "what are my
passwords?" request. I'll file a bug report to the mailman people.

I have added commentary to the "welcome" message identifying that this is an
issue.
