Standard mails end up in your mailbox with a line at the beginning that
says "From ....", which many UAs use to tell where messages start. I
presume your mailer is escaping it so it does confuse your UA. Mine
(Postfix+Cyrus) did not (because Cyrus uses 1 file per mail, so there's
no need), so there was no > from my POV.
