MarkM suggested I send this to this list. This is a technique to add to the
basket that includes measuring book store shelf space devoted to different
languages.
On a Squeak discussion list I wrote:

Also interesting...
Delphi NOT (Java or Smalltalk or Squeak or JDBC or C++ or VB)
=> 66 hits
(Smalltalk or Squeak) NOT (Java or Delphi or JDBC or C++ or VB)
=> 55 hits
Java NOT (Delphi or Smalltalk or Squeak or JDBC or C++ or VB)
=> 2963 hits
C++ NOT (Delphi or Smalltalk or Squeak or JDBC or Java or VB)
=> 9299 hits
VB NOT (Delphi or Smalltalk or Squeak or JDBC or Java or C++)
=> 866 hits
[I should have tried "Visual Basic", too, but
I didn't. For instance,
(VB or "Visual Basic") NOT (Delphi or Smalltalk or Squeak or JDBC or Java or
C++)
gives 1536 hits.]
JDBC NOT (Delphi or Smalltalk or Squeak or VB or Java or C++)
=> 42 hits [admittedly a weird query]
(Java or JDBC) NOT (Delphi or Smalltalk or Squeak or VB or C++)
=> 3347 hits [Wow! Note the increase from
just "Java"]
((JDBC or Java) and (Smalltalk or Squeak)) NOT (Delphi or VB or C++ or
"Visual Basic")
=> 21 hits
((Java or JDBC) and C++) NOT (Delphi or VB or Smalltalk or Squeak or "Visual
Basic")
=> 2966 hits
((Smalltalk or Squeak) and C++) NOT (Delphi or VB or Java or JDBC or "Visual
Basic")
=> 6 hits [!]
((Smalltalk or Squeak) and (VB or "Visual Basic")) NOT (Delphi or C++ or
Java or JDBC)
=> 1 hit
((Smalltalk or Squeak) and Delphi) NOT (VB or "Visual Basic" or C++ or Java
or JDBC)
=> no hits
(Delphi and C++) NOT (Smalltalk or Squeak or VB or Java or JDBC or "Visual
Basic")
=> 22 hits
(Delphi and (VB or "Visual Basic")) NOT (Smalltalk or Squeak or C++ or Java
or JDBC)
=> 15 hits
(Delphi and (JDBC or Java)) NOT (Smalltalk or Squeak or C++ or VB or "Visual
Basic")
=> 15 hits
All these are without restrictions on U.S. location
or type of term ("tax term"), done today, 9th August 2001.
