For performance, what need is there other than to support PK operations?  
Don't you agree that special purpose hardware is inappropriate for single 
key operations (as well as hashing)?

For protecting private keys, what is there besides TEMPEST-shielding and 
Opaque Boxes http://www.agorics.com/agoricpapers/aos/aos.6.html#section6.1.2 ?
