For unknown reasons, I recently took a look at Sun's Community Process
web site (http://jcp.org/) and noticed that they are forming an expert
group to consider revisions to the Java Memory Model and Thread
Specification. I won't claim to understand the issues, but it looks
likely to me that E will be affected by the results. There are some
good people involved, but it may be that E's interests would be best
served by having someone monitor their progress and the proposals so
that judicious decisions to point them in directions beneficial to E can
be made. Does anyone with the right clues have time to take a look?
There's more info at http://www.cs.umd.edu/~pugh/java/memoryModel/
I took a quick look at the agreement for an individual contributing
expert, and it doesn't look onerous. It grants Sun non-exclusive rights
to whatever you tell them. The agreement for joining as part of an
organization requires a payment of $5000.
In this case, it might even be sufficient to just talk to one of the
members of the committee once you were familiar with the issues. (Doug
Lea and William Pugh are on it.)
