A thousand apologies, I missed this the first time: 
<http://osl.cs.uiuc.edu/> was lingering in my bookmarks. While not a 
canonical reference, it has some interesting jumping off points on 
Actors and what Agha and his team are doing with them now. SALSA 
(mentioned towards the bottom of the page at that link) looks 
particularly interesting.
