I wanted to find some more statistics about programming language popularity,
using a job search web site. I tried monster.com, but "C++" is an ignored
keyword there, so I asked google for "programming jobs" and felt lucky, landing
at prgjobs.com.

I looked at the "when posted" dates of several jobs and they were all recent
(within the last two months).

These numbers are just the number of hits returned by each query string, so
there may be overlap, false matches, missed matches, etc., although the editors
of prgjobs.com appear to have canonicalized the data. For example, they
suggest the query "C language", and it does indeed appear to match a bunch of C
jobs.

BTW, I really like MarcS technique of counting titles at the bookstore. I'd be
interested in the latest results from that.
