Everyone,
On the release of 0.8.10alpha1, the first version of E to have all
the major features in E 1.0, I wanted to express a heartfelt thanks
to everyone involved.
The effort has come a long way since I started paying attention in
1999 and started posting to the list in September of that year (I
have to thank Eric Watt Forste for first introducing to me to E in a
side-discussion that arose out of an Albany Perl Mongers meeting that
happened months earlier, where I had first met Eric) and I'd like to
congratulate everyone who has helped E evolve to what it is today.
I've been lucky to have worked, to date, for two different companies
which have encouraged my use of and experimentation with E in very
exciting projects, one of which, OpenCola, gave me the financial and
managerial resources to bring Mark Miller on board as a consultant
and to hire Steve Jenson to be OpenCola's premier E research
programmer. While all of us have since moved on to other ventures,
it's my sincere hope and goal to bring not only that group back
together, but a larger group of people who make E possible and who
make capability-based security research and development an exciting
field to be in right now.
I still believe, as I did in February 2001 when I added my name to
the Statement of Consensus, that capability-based security has a lot
to add to the domain of computing in many fields and walks of life,
and can have a positive influence on computer, network, and
information security at large. An effect that thus far has not yet
been, to my mind, fully explored or fully realized. I like to think
of the E cadre, of which all e-lang list members are part of, to be
prime movers in that future. And while a lot of work undoubtedly
still lays ahead of us, this development marks a significant turning
point, and a marker of the larger fortunes that await.
Once again, thank you all.
