Wow!  I'm glad I asked.  I was wrong on almost all counts!

The tie-in to the object model Doug refers to is "E Pluribus Unum".  "Unum" 
still means approximately what it use to mean (see 
http://www.erights.org/elib/equality/same-object.html ), but is not 
currently supported.  Pluribus has changed it's meaning: it is now the name 
of the E protocol stack as a whole -- the combination of VatTP, CapTP, and 
enough object protocols (yet to be defined) to once again have a meaningful 
Unum layer.
