I just saw this same error for the first time this morning on another machine
-- an MSWindows XP system that had recently been upgraded to Service Pack 2.
The problem remained after I re-installed E from scratch and rebooted. The
things that stopped working (and gave the above error instead) seem to be
those things that depend on the MSWindows registry. When doing things by means
that don't involve the registry, everything still seemed to work just fine.
However, when I used regedit to look at the relevant registry settings, they
all looked just fine.

Are you on XP Service Pack 2? In either case, if your E installation directory
contains a file named "winfo.txt", please send it to me.

Anyone - have you encountered this problem as well? Are you on XP Service Pack
2? Again, whatever system you're running on, if you're seeing this problem,
please send me your winfo.txt file.

Is there anyone running XP Service Pack 2 that isn't having this problem?

Note: I little evidence that the problem is actually related to XP Service
Pack 2. It's just a first hypothesis. And I think E was working fine on that
machine before it was upgraded.

If anyone out there knows enough about MSWindows to help diagnose this
problem, I'd sure appreciate the help. Thanks.

To avoid overwhelming the lists, please send responses privately to me. I'll
summarize for both audiences.

I'll explain how to work around these problems in a separate email.
