[e-lang] Paper real-estate

As an experiment, I just generated eps from David's variant of stackvat.svg, 
included it (and a token one-line caption) in the document using Springer's 
recommended technique, and regenerated the pdf. Due to Springer's (IMO) 
excessive whitespace allocation, this simple diagram displaced more than a 
third of a page of text. I expect all the remaining diagrams we'll need will 
be larger than this one.
