Thanks for all the responses! There is certainly potential for future 
research. Feel free to visit the Wiki page 
http://wiki.erights.org/wiki/Future_research_topics to enter, modify or 
expand ideas. Here are a couple of remarks:

    * The E to SCOLL translator idea sounds interesting. This may also
      lay the foundation for other types of audits.
    * ENative: efficient execution of E programs are IMO crucial for
      some large-scale applications (e.g. POLA desktop, EBASS and a
      distributed version of Second Life). I obviously find ENative
      appealing because of my interest in languages and compilers.
      However, I'm not yet convinced that such research will be
      sufficient for earning a PhD.
    * Safe serialization under mutual suspicion, upgrade issues and
      legacy compatibility appear to be *very* difficult problems.

I'm still busy with reading, so these remarks are subject to revision 
and are certainly not complete. Thanks again for the lively interest and 
help!
