Just saw this on reddit.com:

It would have been nice if this kind of thing (or Nailgun - mentioned in 
  Patrick Wright's comment) was popularized 10 years ago.

They haven't worked on security issues for it yet.  But having this be 
the standard for desktop Java applications would remove a lot of the 
typical annoyances.
