I should clarify. The posted design is based on an earlier design and
implementation by Mike Samuel. That one did work across browsers, and
has been a tremendous source of ideas and more. Although this version
inherits many ideas from that earlier version, it inherits none of the
earlier version's maturity.

The "testing" I've done on the current code, if you want to call it
that, is to paste it into a squarefree shell on Firefox and start
poking at it. The things I tried seemed to work. However, when I tried
the same on IE it didn't start. I haven't yet diagnosed why. So to
reiterate: extremely untested, but open from the beginning.
