Sir, (Jonathan Shapiro?),
My name is Larry Cattoor. I work for University of Utah Environmental =
Health and Safety in Salt Lake City, Utah. I am taking a graduate =
course on computer operating systems, and the final group project is to =
research and report on an operating system. This project is due on 20 =
August 2001.
My study group (3 people) are considering EROS for the topic of our =
paper. After reviewing your web site, many of the items we are to =
discuss are available. However, some items for discussion are not.
If we choose EROS as our topic, with your permission, are you available =
to assist in answering some of the required topics not specifically =
detailed on your web site?
We would be happy to share our final paper with you. And, maybe you can =
use it in some way to promote EROS.
Thanks,
Larry
Following is an outline of topics we must cover in our paper and in our =
presentation:
The final paper/report will include the following:
The origin of the OS
a.. Who designed the OS?
b.. What company created it?
c.. For what product or purpose was it created?
d.. How long ago was it created?
e.. Is it still evolving?
The platform, attributes, characteristics, and capabilities of the OS
a.. What platforms or hardware does the OS run on?
b.. Is the system a single or multi-user system?=20
c.. What are its unique capabilities? Strengths? Weaknesses?
The workings of the OS
a.. What file management system does it use?
b.. What processor management system does it use?
c.. What memory management system does it use?
The applications of the OS?
a.. What applications are generally run on the OS?
b.. How many software applications run on it?
c.. What types of applications? Engineering, personal computing, =
simulation, design, CAD, banking, communication etc.?
Potential market of the OS
a.. Is the market big or small for this OS?
b.. Is the OS popular?
c.. Is it widely used? Why? Why not?
d.. Is it a specialty OS?
Vendor/supplier support for this OS
a.. Who manufactures the OS?
b.. Is it proprietary?
c.. What are the costs?
d.. Is there additional support for this OS? What are the costs?
e.. Is there a contract required for additional support? If so, =
describe it.
The future of the OS, including the trends that may affect it
a.. Is the OS begin extended or upgraded?
b.. Is it being phased out?
What does the future of this OS look like?
