Perl is gross but ubiquitous. Python is a lot more widely deployed than Scheme.

Scheme's fine by me (anything but tcl), but Perl might be more attractive to the ((())) haters and it's got all that cool text manipulation stuff. The interpreter's not as small as a tiny Scheme, but it's not that big either (and we are talking about devel machines here, not embedded systems right?).
