[This is the first in a series of messages in what has so far been private correspondence about Windows install problems. Both Dan & Michael have allowed me to forward their correspondence to the e-lang list. Dan's problem is the one that remains unsolved, but I'm also forwarding Michael's messages in case they help. For those not interested, I'm prefixing the subject of each of these messages with "Install:". --MarkM]

Hi Mark,

I donwloaded the .tgz format archive of E 0.84 for Windows and I've had some trouble installing it as recommended. I unzip the archive (via WinZip) and place it in C:\eights.org with my JRE in the PATH variable (I'm using JDK 1.1.8 -- the relevant part of the PATH is "C:\PROGRA~1\jdk1.1.8\bin;" which is where JRE is), yet, when I double click on the Setup.pif file, a console window flashes some messages about "Out of environment" and al the .pifs in C:\erights.org\bin\win32\ mention something about being in the wrong startup directory (and the header of the dialog box informing me of this labels itself as "MS-DOS 16 bit subsystem", which I found interesting.

Any ideas?
