I did indeed spent a bunch of work transforming the code in the wrong direction. I will add to my list of cleanup tasks the undoing of this damage. Sigh. At least I like where I'll now be going. In the future, I will also try to avoid being an idiot, and ask before proceeding on a transformation whose rationale I don't understand.
