Bug: E Doesn't Seem to Install on Win98 2nd Edition Mark S. Miller (markm@caplet.com)

On 3 separate Win98 2nd Edition machines, E failed to install in the same way: Apparently, during the part of the install process where it is *only* gathering information about the system using standard Windows systems calls -- after showing "If the cursor is on the end of this line, just hit Enter. ?", after the user hits enter, but before any further text is displayed -- it crashes with the standard uninformative "Program has Performed an Illegal Operation" monologue box. This E install has been tested and is known to work on at least one configuration each of Win95, Win98 1st Edition, WinNT, and Win2000. The above failure mode has not been observed on any of these other platforms.

In about a week I'll be upgrading my laptop to Win98 2nd Edition and trying to track this one down. In the meantime, E should continue to be fine on Win95, Win98 1st Edition, WinNT, and Win2000. (And separately, of course, on Linux.)

If anyone with Win98 2nd Edition succeeds, of fails with different symptoms, please let me know. If anyone fails to install on any other version of Windows, especially if the symptoms are as described above, please let me know. Thanks.

Difficult though it may be, I'll resist making any editorial comments about Windows until I figure out what the problem is.

         Cheers,
