Bengt:
Are you running this on a 486? If so, you'll need to change some kernel compilation flags; the current default compilation assumes pentium or better. I haven't tested on a 486 in a while, but there shouldn't have been any changes that prevent the 486 from running correctly.
Please let me know if this is the case, and I'll add it to my list for this weekend.
