The most important part is that I am no longer at IBM. While I think it's unfortunate that things did not work out there, the parting was reasonably amicable and there is some reason for optimism about working with IBM in the future. The bottom line is that we are all in the same boat: we need to build a base for securing and evolving the internet. EROS is certainly not the only possible solution, but it's probably the furthest along.
I have spent the last week getting my office at home organized. It is quite amazing how many "things" go into an office, and it has been long enough since the last time I worked at home that essentially everything needed to be replaced. I'm starting to talk to consulting clients and to potential investors about things in the EROS space.
To be clear about the investors, I am not talking about forming a company
(though that could change if the academic option doesn't come through).
Rather, a few venture groups have expressed interest in funding efforts
around the general area of EROS, and have asked me to spend some time with
them to brainstorm about the space. If you are contemplating putting
together a commercial effort around the EROS base, or would do so if it were
clearly going to be there in time to meet your needs, get in touch with me
and I'll try to (a) help you get your ideas together if you wish and (b)
make introductions to appropriate investors if I know them.
Over the next few weeks, I will be putting together a concrete plan for the EROS project. There is a lot that needs to be done, and if I can get the work items organized properly we should be able to do them together. I'll be posting my version of what needs to be done, and asking all of you for both for input on the list and also to volunteer for some of the tasks.
I'm looking forward to making EROS more real, and addressing most of the issues that people on the lists have identified over the last year or two. The rest of the issues, I hope, will be rendered moot by the direction I hope EROS will take.
